Vintage, Creative Portraits at Denver Union Station
Moving from New Orleans six months ago, I have been itching to start shooting at new locations in Colorado. Starting over in a new city, discovering places to photograph is so addictive to me. I get excited about how light comes through the window and how color demands a space. I not only get to do what I love, but I get to discover and be curious in this new place I call home.
Union Station was high up on my list to photograph for several reasons. First, the interior is absolutely stunning. Dark, wooden benches, warm, golden light, and arches lining the high walls. The atmosphere is moving - alive with chatter, fast footsteps, train tracks screeching, coffee machines bubbling, and that cold, brisk, Colorado air slipping in through the entrance every so often. I was so drawn to the feeling of this place that I knew I needed to create here.
there is no photo permit necessary to photograph in denver’s union station.
Typically, in public buildings like this security is quick to ask you to leave. To my surprise, when talking to one of the baristas, he said there are photographers there almost every day creating. This was a comforting feeling knowing it was not an uncommon sight.
However, there are some restrictions. According to their website, “Photography is only allowed in the Great Hall of Union Station. No shoots are allowed on upper or lower levels, including the Crawford Hotel, the Cooper Lounge, and all tenants within Denver Union Station. Photoshoots must be limited to 45 minutes or less.”
Realistically, you should expect to be taking photos in front of crowds. Union Station is a busy train station with a lot of foot traffic. Make sure your subject is comfortable posing with a few eyes on them!
Styling can really elevate your sessions. That’s why for each of my photo sessions, I work with my clients to create a cohesive look that compliments them and the story. For this shoot, I wanted a warm, vintage travel look. Hannah and I worked together to bring pieces from each of our closets to create this look! It is so special to work with other creatives that can add SO much to your ideas.
Ultimately, these photos make me feel like packing up a duffel and hopping on the next train to wherever it takes me. So happy to have one of my bucket list Colorado locations checked off. Thanks so much Hannah for being the best model out there!
